How To Be A Photographer

how to be a photographer

Commercial photographer Hampshire

I recently undertook a commercial commission for an excellent designer in Hampshire. I spent a day capturing natural photographs in an aerospace business in Southampton.

This is where I add value to a project as a photographer. I change an otherwise fairly ordinary looking commercial factory into a set of contemporary and interesting images.

I have worked in Hampshire as a commercial photographer for over 20 years. When I started, commercial commissions were normally art directed and involved a photographer’s assistant and photographer to carry loads of heavy lighting and medium format Photography Kit. Most Hampshire based companies would commission photography via an ad or design agencies and the photo shoot would be visualised so I would have to try and capture good commercial images that related to the visuals. This process was very time consuming and it took a long hard day to shoot half a dozen images. I decided about 10 years ago that this commercial photography process was slow, expensive and lacked any spontaneity.

All my commercial photography commissions wether they are in Hampshire or London are shot without art direction. The client will brief me with a shot list and then will let me capture good creative photography throughout the day. As a commercial photographer working within tight budgets and time constraints, I can now produce a wide variety of contemporary commercial images in a single day.

Search engines have also had an effect of photographic commissions. They have allowed clients direct access to photographers and therefore the photographer has to be able to work directly with the end client and extract a photographic brief from the client that allows the photographer to fulfil the client’s needs.

In the winter of 2005, Belgian photographer Anne Daems lived in New York City for six months as a Resident of the International Studio and Curatorial Program. In this small book of street photography, Daems focuses her lens on young New Yorkers, captured unawares–on the sidewalks of Soho, in the subway, under scaffolding, in traffic, and through shop windows. These delicate surveillance snapshots raise questions about voyeurism, youth, conventional beauty and how we tend to classify strangers. They are accompanied by an interview between Daems and artist Dan Graham, whose work also deals with surveillance:DG: Well, your work is about people. You”re interested in people, aren”t you?AD: Mmmmm.GD: You”re not interested in technique, like Gursky.AD: No, not at all.DG: Basically in normal people. But how normal are people?(both start laughing)AD: Well, the nicest people are a bit abnormal.

A Touch of His Presence

A Touch of His Presence

$12.99

We long to know God’s presence. As Christians, we understand he is constantly there in all the highs and lows of our lives. But how can we actually experience him in a way that satisfies the deep hunger of our hearts? What does it take for us to “taste and see” that the Lord is not only good, but also tangible and wonderfully available? With his photographer’s instinct for uncovering the sublime in the commonplace, Charles Stanley reveals a richly relational God who wants us to know him in the ordinariness of our lives. “We live, eat, work, pray, weep, and rejoice in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” says Stanley. Taking us to the Bible, he opens our eyes to the different ways and circumstances in which God draws close to us . . . and draws us close to him. A Wealth of Wisdom: Legendary African American Elders Speak Edited By Camille Cosby and Renee Poussaint, Photographer Howard Bingham

$19.99

The wisdom of our elders is our most valuable resource. In A Wealth of Wisdom, a collection of stories, experiences, and observations of more than fifty African Americans, ages seventy and over, extraordinary men and women explain how we as a nation got to where we are. With accounts by everyone from Maya Angelou and Ray Charles to Robert Guillaume and Coretta Scott King, these pivotal leaders — representing every region in the nation and covering a wide range of professional and personal lifestyles — take us behind their historic public moments to their underlying personal realities.
The editors collected these stories as part of the National Visionary Leadership Project, an organization that preserves and recounts the lessons learned from our country’s African American elders so that the young people of today can be great leaders of tomorrow. As Geoffrey Holder declares, “Find your great-aunt or your favorite godmother, and ask them questions. They’ll give you all the answers — their way. They are the writers of the book.”

Stunned by an exhibit of Georgia O’Keeffe at the National Gallery of Art in the late ’80’s, I became intrigued by one of America’s great artists.Responding to the images in her paintings and her fascinating life with husband, Alfred Stieglitz, the famous photographer, I began an imaginary poetic biography. She suffered conflicts still pertinent to women artists of any genre today: How to fulfill one’s gifts and be in relationship. Her love for Stieglitz and his obdurate refusal to join her when her creative path led to New Mexico created “a woman divided.” With pain we are unable to measure, she crisscrossed the country between Alfred in New York and her beloved West. After Alfred’s death, still haunted by her choice, she worked into her nineties painting the Western landscape. Her vibrant body of work remains a legacy to us all.

Ahlam Shibli

Ahlam Shibli

$39.45

From January to July of 2005, photographer Ahlam Shibli, born in Palestine in 1970, followed the young Palestinians of the Israeli army, soldiers of Bedouin descent deployed in tracking units at borders and in the occupied territories. The banal and unheroic moments she recorded, while the men were resting or waiting for something to happen, are set alongside images of destroyed houses and decayed infrastructure, cemeteries where Palestinians who died fighting against Israel are buried beside those who fought on its behalf, and the villages from which the men come and to which they will return. Shibli’s portraits are understanding and her subjects forcefully portrayed, but their loyalty to the state of Israel touches a sore spot, and highlights certain divisive questions about how the Palestinian community can move forward. What might it mean for these young men to serve in the Israeli army? In Shibli’s words, what is the price a minority is forced to pay to the majority to be accepted?

Alias Man Ray: The Art of Reinvention

Alias Man Ray: The Art of Reinvention

$50

Born Emmanuel Radnitzky, the artist known as Man Ray (1890–1976) revealed multiple artistic identities over the course of his career—New York Dadaist, Parisian Surrealist, international portraitist, and fashion photographer––and produced important works as a photographer, painter, filmmaker, writer, and maker of objects. Alias Man Ray considers how the artist’s life and career were shaped by his turn-of-the-century American Jewish immigrant experience and his lifelong evasion of his past. As an exploration of the artist’s deliberate cultural ambiguity, which allowed him to become the first American artist to be accepted by the Paris avant garde, this book examines the dynamic connection between Man Ray’s working-class origins, his assimilation, the evolution of his art, and his willful construction of his own artistic persona, as evidenced in a series of subtle, encrypted self-references throughout the artist’s career. Beautifully illustrated, Alias Man Ray will stand as a definitive study of an incomparable figure in 20th-century art.

American Iconographic: National Geographic, Global Culture, and the Visual Imagination

American Iconographic: National Geographic, Global Culture, and the Visual Imagination

$16

In an era before affordable travel, National Geographic not only served as the first glimpse of countless other worlds for its readers, but it helped them confront sweeping historical change. There was a time when its cover, with the unmistakable yellow frame, seemed to be on every coffee table, in every waiting room. In American Iconographic, Stephanie L. Hawkins traces National Geographic’s rise to cultural prominence, from its first publication of nude photographs in 1896 to the 1950s, when the magazine’s trademark visual and textual motifs found their way into cartoon caricature, popular novels, and film trading on the “romance” of the magazine’s distinctive visual fare. National Geographic transformed local color into global culture through its production and circulation of readily identifiable cultural icons. The adventurer-photographer, the exotic woman of color, and the intrepid explorer were part of the magazine’s “institutional aesthetic,” a visual and textual repertoire that drew upon popular nineteenth-century literary and cultural traditions. This aesthetic encouraged readers to identify themselves as members not only in an elite society but, paradoxically, as both Americans and global citizens. More than a window on the world, National Geographic presented a window on American cultural attitudes and drew forth a variety of complex responses to social and historical changes brought about by immigration, the Great Depression, and world war.Drawing on the National Geographic Society’s archive of readers’ letters and its founders’ correspondence, Hawkins reveals how the magazine’s participation in the “culture industry” was not so straightforward as scholars have assumed. Letters from the magazine’s earliest readers offer an important intervention in this narrative of passive spectatorship, revealing how readers resisted and revised National

Ross didn’t want to believe that he and Lisa had married too soon. He didn’t want to believe that each day the man he thought himself to be was being stripped away by the woman he loved—leaving him feeling like a kept man instead of the man of the house. And then—betrayal. No one knows how it happened, how they could have done this to each other. But now, they each want to tell their side of the story. As Asha, Lisa and Ross travel down the road to discovery, you will root for them, hurt for them, hate them and love them. But you will never forget them.An Ordinary Woman is about the betrayal of the most sacred of trusts. It is about the that one moment when a single choice will change lives forever. Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes

$27.99

In 2004 after a fractious election in which the gun argument played a significant part, photo-journalist Kyle Cassidy hit the road to learn why so many people owned so many guns. His search for answers took him on a journey that extended over two years and 15,000 miles. Ultimately, more than a hundred gun owners opened their doors and their lives to him, answering the single question he asked: “why”. The result is a collection of striking and thought provoking photographs: Armed America: Portraits of Gun Owners in Their Homes. Few issues generate as much debate as firearms. Without taking a pro or con stance, Armed America shows the faces of American gun owners and gives voice to each individual “why”…without ancillary comment, editorializing, or judgment. These “everyman” portraits reveal people from different backgrounds, living in various locations, with one common connection. “I tried to remove ‘gun owner’ from my mind as much as possible when making the actual photograph,” says Cassidy. “I would go into someone’s house and immediately start thinking ‘how can I capture this person or this family fairly?” While it would be very easy for any photographer to pose a man with a military weapon in a stern and menacing way, light it dramatically and come away with a shocking photograph, Cassidy chose another more accurate and startling route. “I would ask myself ‘What’s this guy like every day? How do his friends and family see him?’ He’s a guy who owns a parakeet, or two cats, or a poodle, he’s got two kids—he doesn’t frown all day long because he’s got a gun.” This riveting collection of 100+ photos will capture every reader’s attention—whatever their stance ongun control.

Avedon at Work: In the American West

Avedon at Work: In the American West

$60

Laura Wilson shadowed the Shadower, and showed us as much as can be shown of how his work was done. –Larry McMurtry, from the ForewordInternationally acclaimed for his portraits of powerful and accomplished people and women of great beauty, Richard Avedon was one of the twentieth century’s greatest photographers–but perhaps not the most obvious choice to create a portrait of ordinary people of the American West. Yet in 1979, the Amon Carter Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, daringly commissioned him to do just that. The resulting 1985 exhibition and book, In the American West, was a milestone in American photography and Avedon’s most important body of work. His unflinching portraits of oilfield and slaughterhouse workers, miners, waitresses, drifters, mental patients, teenagers, and others captured the unknown and often ignored people who work at hard, uncelebrated jobs. Making no apologies for shattering stereotypes of the West and Westerners, Avedon said, I’m looking for a new definition of a photographic portrait. I’m looking for people who are surprising–heartbreaking–or beautiful in a terrifying way. Beauty that might scare you to death until you acknowledge it as part of yourself. Photographer Laura Wilson worked with Avedon during the six years he was making In the American West. In Avedon at Work, she presents a unique photographic record of his creation of this masterwork–the first time a major photographer has been documented in great depth over an extended period of time. She combines images she made during the photographic sessions with entries from her journal to show Avedon’s working methods, his choice of subjects, his creative process, and even his experiments andfailures. Also included are a number of Avedon’s finished portraits, as well as his own comments and letters from some of the subjects. Avedon at Work adds a new dimension to our understanding of one of the twentieth century’s most significant series of portraits. For everyone interested

Beside The Rio Hondo

Beside The Rio Hondo

$22.95

How can a lone female of “a certain age” take her last stand on a stony wedge of land in the mountains of Northern New Mexico? Will she find a job, learn to chop wood, be eaten by a bear or give it up and fall in love again? “Beside the Rio Hondo” is a memoir that explores in depth Phaedra Greenwood’s connection with the natural world and simultaneous need for community. Her ex-husband gives her a year to live in the old adobe where they raised their children; then he plans to sell it so they can split the proceeds. But she wants to stay in the house forever. She has a year to come up with her own financing to buy out his half of the property or negotiate a deal with the neighbors. The house is falling apart, her money is running out and she has never applied for a loan in her life. It’s a hell of a time to decide to have an epiphany. “For over three decades I have made my home in the Taos area of Northern New Mexico,” the author says, “not just because I love the spare and dramatic landscape, but also because I am intrigued by the complex layers of history and culture. I admire the devotion of the artists and craftsmen to their work, the loving care New Mexicans bestow on their churches and the close family ties that bond them in community. As I struggle with my garden, my orchard and old adobe “casa,” I absorb with gratitude my neighbors’ rural savvy and the skills these tenacious hunters, fishermen, and ranchers have developed over the centuries to survive and thrive in the high mountain desert. Life here is hard, but often delicious. The energy, exotic flavors and bright colors of Taos are unique.” Phaedra Greenwood is a freelance writer/photographer whose poems, essays and stories have appeared in many local newspapers, magazines and anthologies. She has won numerous literary prizes including the Katherine Anne Porter Award. As a journalist and columnist for “The Taos News,” she received two first place awards in 2000 from the New Mexico Press Association for

Blessing Same-Sex Unions: The Perils of Queer Romance and the Confusions of Christian Marriage

Blessing Same-Sex Unions: The Perils of Queer Romance and the Confusions of Christian Marriage

$29

At most church weddings, the person presiding over the ritual is not a priest or a pastor, but the wedding planner, followed by the photographer, the florist, and the caterer. And in this day and age, more wedding theology is supplied by Modern Bride magazine or reality television than by any of the Christian treatises on holy matrimony. Indeed, church weddings have strayed long and far from distinctly Christian aspirations. The costumes and gestures might still be right, but the intentions are hardly religious. Why then, asks noted gay commentator Mark D. Jordan, are so many churches vehemently opposed to blessing same-sex unions? In this incisive work, Jordan shows how carefully selected ideals of Christian marriage have come to dominate recent debates over same-sex unions. Opponents of gay marriage, he reveals, too often confuse simplified ideals of matrimony with historical facts. They suppose, for instance, that there has been a stable Christian tradition of marriage across millennia, when in reality Christians have quarreled among themselves for centuries about even the most basic elements of marital theology, authorizing experiments like polygamy and divorce.Jordan also argues that no matter what the courts do, Christian churches will have to decide for themselves whether to bless same-sex unions. No civil compromise can settle the religious questions surrounding gay marriage. And queer Christians, he contends, will have to discover for themselves what they really want out of marriage. If they are not just after legal recognition as a couple or a place at the social table, do they really seek the blessing of God? Or just the garish melodrama of a white wedding? Posing trenchant questions such as these, Blessing Same-Sex Unions will be a must-read for both sides of the debate over gay marriage in America today.

Breathing Room

Breathing Room

$13.99

In her dazzling debut novel, award-winning author Patricia Elam takes us into the lives of two completely different women whose friendship has helped them weather just about everything. But now they’re at a crossroads where understanding may not be enough — a place where they must risk it all to rediscover what they cherish most. Photographer Norma Simmons-Greer has a loving husband, a lively young son, and an upper-middle-class lifestyle. Probation officer Moxie Dilliard is as dedicated to her ideals as she is to her talented teenage daughter, Zadi. Best friends after meeting in college, Norma and Moxie are each other’s reality check and reassurance. But suddenly the bond between them begins to unravel in unexpected ways. Anguished over the loss of her second child and her husband’s recent withdrawal, Norma takes refuge in a complex love affair that puts her at odds with Moxie — and with herself. Haunted by her beloved mother’s inspiring yet disturbing emotional legacy, Moxie struggles to understand her friend, while her own refusal to compromise threatens to shatter her relationship with Zadi. And a devastating crisis will challenge both women to face the hardest of truths. With insight, humor, and heartbreaking immediacy, Patricia Elam presents a beautifully written portrait of two unforgettable women, and the teenager they both cherish, as they negotiate the ever-shifting terrain of friendship and identity. A wise, tender novel of what love can and cannot survive, Breathing Room is also an exploration of how the past can at once inspire and limit us, and of the pain — and promise — that accompany us on the journey we all share.

Bringing Nature Home

Bringing Nature Home

$45

Unlike most flower-arrangement books, which rely on expensive and often nonseasonal flowers from florists, this book presents an alternative that is in line with the back to nature movement. This is the first volume to showcase how to be inspired by nature s seasonal bounty and bring that nature into the home through floral arrangements. From the well-known lifestyle photographer Ngoc Minh Ngo and Nicolette Owen of Brooklyn s Little Flower School, Bringing Nature Home presents a portfolio of unique and original floral arrangements directly inspired by the seasons and the local environment, with sources ranging from farmers market offerings to the backyard garden. Presented through lush photography that also showcases the beautiful interiors the arrangements are created for, this is as much a decorating tome as it is a floral-arrangement guide. A how-to section offers advice on the selection, trimming, and care of the arrangements and on repurposed and unique containers, making this book practical as well as inspiring.

Build a Better Photograph: A Disciplined Approach to Creativity

Build a Better Photograph: A Disciplined Approach to Creativity

$34.95

While many books address the equipment, techniques, and compositional approaches to image creation, few describe the steps involved in the creation of the picture idea. This book is a passport to the creative process of professional artists. The context is photography but the ideas can be applied across the board. This book emphasizes working out how to achieve the end result before we begin. A key question is what do we have to get right as we shoot and what can we achieve later in post-processing? The correct answer will drive the quality of our imagery and extend our careers. This book is not a how-to book on making photographs. Rather, this book is about the creative process of conceptualizing ideas and executing those ideas to make a photograph. How do artists conceptualize? Where do they get their ideas? How do they incorporate those ideas into their work?Compositing and storytelling abilities have never been easier and more difficult to achieve. Sound contradictory? It is. Illogical? It is. We will journey together to solve the many whys and hows so that the technology does not get in the way of image content and story. As it relates to a particular topic in the text, there are discussions about photographic theory, lighting, composition, color and, of course, Photoshop. Included are examples of my work, each with a detailed examination of my creative process for that particular photograph. Again the idea here is to examine creativity in a way that demystifies the process. Artists create. Good artists have a process. Great artists have discipline. This book is about all three.Michael E. Stern, a professional photographer since graduating from Art Center College of Design in 1979, has been working in the entertainment industry with The Walt Disney Co., Warner Brothers Studios, Universal Studios, and Sid & Marty Krofft Pictures among others. He has photographed executives, celebrities, products, architecture and created special visual

California on the Breadlines

California on the Breadlines

$36.08

California on the Breadlines is the compelling account of how Dorothea Lange, the Great Depression’’s most famous photographer, and Paul Taylor, her labor economist husband, forged a relationship that was private–they both divorced spouses to be together–collaborative, and richly productive. Lange and Taylor poured their considerable energies into the decade-long project of documenting the plight of California’’s dispossessed, which in 1939 culminated in the publication of their landmark book, American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion. Jan Goggans blends biography, literature, and history to retrace the paths that brought Lange and Taylor together. She shows how American Exodus set forth a new way of understanding those in crisis during the economic disaster in California and ultimately informed the way we think about the Great Depression itself.
