A backdrop is a painted curtain that hangs in the back of the stage to indicate scenery. Backdrops are an important part of decorating a stage for a professional setup. Perhaps the most common use of a backdrop is in photographic studios and movie theaters. Photographers and movie directors use backdrops to convert their studios or sets into a desired image of a location or place. Theater Backdrops and Movie Backdrops are pieces of cloth that fully or partially cover a stage. They come in many different colors, types, and sizes.

Backdrops technology has come a long way. There is a great variety of materials that can be used to create a backdrop. Backdrops can be used to depict backgrounds as sophisticated as flying in the space or running a sprint in front of a packed stadium. Can backdrops be created for any occasion? Well, a backdrop is limited to the imagination of the user or the graphic designer. Thanks to the advance of computer imaging technology, graphic designers can now create any type of backdrop with the help of graphic design software such as Photoshop or Gimp.

The creation of a backdrop involves three steps. The first step is to determine the type of scenery or image that needs to be created or portrayed in the background of a stage or studio. Once the image or scenery is finalized, the next step is to start creating the design using computer based graphic design software. After the design is created and finalized, then comes the role of a backdrop artist. Before the artist paints the actual backdrop image, he must “size” the fabric – a process which seals the fibers. (A translucency requires starching rather than sizing.) For a typical opaque drop there are several choices for sizing – many scene shops use flame retardant. Then using airbrush, the Artist paints the backdrop completing the process.

Once the backdrop is finished, it can be staged using long poles and frames to ensure that the entire stage is covered by the backdrops. A professionally installed backdrop will create a magnificent illusion generating stunningly realistic and beautiful sceneries and images. So the next time you look at a backdrop, remember how much work goes into it and appreciate the artistic talent behind creating the backdrop.

Although backdrops can be created using different types of material and fabric, many states require the backdrops to be fire retardant for safety reasons. It is also important to know the difference between cheap low quality non fire retardant and high quality hand painted backdrops. There was a live album issued in 2004 as well, but for the most part, McKee has stubbornly followed her own path for the past 16 years. It’s true that acoustic guitars permeate this mix by producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist Jim Akin, and the songs walk the folk-rock border, but they are the frame for the rich, labyrinthine, multidimensional songs here. McKee wrote or co-wrote nine of the album’s 12 tracks. Using folk, country and rock backdrops, McKee’s songs offer stories of the broken, the lost, the wider-eyed and the hopeless. There’s the confessional longing of the protagonist in “Season of the Fair” where memory, evoked by emptiness and rejection, wraps itself in the warm embrace of strummed, unplugged six-strings and lets itself fall framed by an organ, a lone electric guitar punching through the refrain, and the singer’s voice, trying hard to hold what is not only fleeting but weighted in unrelenting pain. The loose, slippery country-rock of “Sullen Sou,” alternates between the balance of guitars and just behind the beat drums as the singer lets the depth of her emotion flow in images from her mouth like raw honey. Self Portrait $11.99 Had Lalah Hathaway’s third and fourth solo albums been separated by a gap in time equal to the one between her second and third, Self Portrait would not have come out until 2014. But it arrived six years earlier, in time for her to connect with the rejuvenated Stax label, home of Angie Stone. The set reunites Hathaway with Rex Rideout, the producer/songwriter who worked with the singer on “Forever, for Always, for Love,” the title cut of the Luther Vandross tribute album that appeared in 2004. Rideout is the primary collaborator, with his input on half of the songs, while kindred spirits Rahsaan Patterson and Sandra St. Victor also contribute to a handful of tracks. More mellow and unified than 2004’s Outrun the Sky, the album maintains a steady flow, whether the backdrops feature midtempo dance rhythms and horns, deep basslines and finger snaps, or acoustic guitars and glistening keyboards. Nothing is bound to jump out of the speakers and pull you around the room, but there’s an unshakable lingering effect with nearly every song. More than anything, the album helps bring back the art of the subtly seductive slow jam, despite the lyrical range, which covers personal issues almost as frequently as relationships. Slowest and most stunning is the closer, “Tragic Inevitability,” co-produced with Manuel Hugas, Wiboud Burkens, and Anthony Jeffries; it’s a breakup song (“It hurts me so/And I will not be consoled”), but no one will be doing any kind of separating while the song is within earshot. In the liners, check the random jabs at vocalists who, unlike Hathaway herself, require studio enhancements: “Pitch is the new black”; “Auto tune this!” She uses some effects of her own here, but they are used for effect, not as a corrective device.
