Did You Know? Big Apple Photography Tours

New York City is a collage of visionary delights. So, how does an average vacationer get these wonderful pictures? How does one know what is the best shot to take? Does one want to spend valuable vacation time hunting for memorable shots to add to personal portfolios? I have a great idea! How about a private tour with your own personal photographer!

New York City photography tours are the answer. In a two or three hour tour your own personal guide can take you to the most photographed areas in the Big Apple. Your personal photographer will snap shots of your party with New York sites and deliver them to you following the tour. It could not be more trouble free and enjoyable than that.

The Big Apple has many Photographic Images to capture. Capturing memories is the idea of a vacation; is it not? I say that it is a huge part. Everyone wants to remember their vacation. Especially a New York City vacation. As a matter of fact, I have heard they have a wonderful park.

What is more photographic in New York than Central Park? That is one choice for a tour of photographic delights, capturing lifetime memories. The Park has costarred in many motion pictures. The Central Park tour begins in Times Square; then a stroll through The Park to take pictures at Strawberry Fields, The Wildlife Center, Sheep’s Meadow, Bethesda Fountain, and Bow Bridge; many are sites of motion pictures. Theses locations provide for some wonderful backdrops for everlasting memories.

The Best of New York tour will take you to choice locations that include Rockefeller Center with a 360 degree view of the city from open air terraces at the top, the famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Grand Central Station, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square and more. These are some of the most photographed sights in the City and the Big Apple’s most loved landmarks. These are spectacular photographic opportunities.

The tours provide you and your private party with over 70 photos on CD ROM. The native New Yorker guide and photographer knows the ins and outs of the Big Apple so you will get the most value for your time and money. It is a great way to orient yourself to New York, get pictures of interesting sites, and get tips so you can get the most out of your New York City stay. This tour is a great way to begin a New York City vacation.

Until his untimely death, Jim Croce was a force to be reckoned with on radio playlists. Photographs & Memories repackages some of his best work. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles On Photography is a 1977 collection of essays by Susan Sontag. It originally appeared as a series of essays in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977. In the book, Sontag expresses her views on the history and presentday role of photography in capitalist societies as of the 1970s. Sontag discusses many examples of modern photography. Among these, she contrasts Diane Arbuss work with that of Depressionera documentary photography commissioned by the Farm Security Administration. She also explores the history of American photography in relation to the idealistic notions of America put forth by Walt Whitman and traces these ideas through to the increasingly cynical aesthetic notions of the 1970s, particularly in relation to Arbus and Andy Warhol. The Realisms Of Berenice Abbott: Documentary Photography And Political Action

The Realisms Of Berenice Abbott: Documentary Photography And Political Action

$43.99

The Realisms of Berenice Abbott provides the first in-depth consideration of the work of photographer Berenice Abbott. Though best known for her 1930s documentary images of New York City this book examines a broad range of Abbott"s work-including portraits from the 1920s little known and uncompleted projects from the 1930s and experimental science photography from the 1950s. It argues that Abbott consistently relied on realism as the theoretical armature for her work even as her understanding of that term changed over time and in relation to specific historical circumstances. But as Weissman demonstrates Abbott"s unflinching commitment to "realist" aesthetics led her to develop a critical theory of documentary that recognizes the complexity of representation without excluding or obscuring a connection between art and engagement in the political public sphere. In telling Abbott"s story The Realisms of Berenice Abbott reveals insights into the politics and social context of documentary production and presents a thoughtful analysis of why documentary remains a compelling artistic strategy today. The Realisms of Berenice Abbott provides the first in-depth consideration of the work of photographer Berenice Abbott. Panoramic Photography

Panoramic Photography

$68.51

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Panoramic photography is a technique of photography, using specialized equipment or software, that captures images with elongated fields of view. It is sometimes known as wide format photography. The term has also been applied to a photograph that is cropped to a relatively wide aspect ratio. While there is no formal division between wideangle and panoramic photography, wide angle normally refers to a type of lens, but this lens type does not necessarily image a panorama. An image made with an ultra wide angle fisheye lens covering the normal film frame of 1:1.33 is not automatically considered to be a panorama. An image showing a field of view approximating, or greater than, that of the human eye about 160 by 75 may be termed panoramic. This generally means it has an aspect ratio of 2:1 or larger, the image being at least twice as wide as its height. The resulting images take the form of a wide strip. Some panoramic images have aspect ratios of 4:1 and sometimes 10:1, covering fields of view of up to 360 degrees. Both the aspect ratio and coverage of field are important factors in defining a true panoramic image. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. 101 Reasons to Love the Tigers

$1.63

Eager for baseball season to begin and for the Michigan winter to thaw, a record-breaking 44,934 fans poured into Comerica Stadium for the Tigers’ opening game this April. It’s a trend that’s building. After making it to the 2006 World Series, ticket sales have been at all-time highs, and predictions for 08 are even fiercer – this season, an estimated 3 million fans will come root for the Tigers on their home turf. The Detroit Tigers have played a big role in making baseball America’s pastime. It’s the team of Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, and Hal Newhouser. It’s the team who played at the historic Tigers Stadium for almost ninety years and whose games were called by the legendary voice of broadcaster Ernie Harwell for almost half a century. As one of the first teams in the American League and one of the few to still remain in its original city, the Tigs, win or lose, are the pride of the Motor City. 101 Reasons to Love the Tigers is a natural addition to a series that celebrates baseball’s greats. Complete with photography from both today and yesteryear, this lively book pays homage to the Tigers’ most memorable moments, rich traditions, and legendary players.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Jam

20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Jam

$9.99

Inexplicably, Universal saw fit to re-release a 20th Century Masters survey of the Jam a mere 18 months or so after its original release. Along with new photography, there’s also a slight modification in the track listing, which is sadly underwhelming and fails to paint a true portrait of the diverse songwriting that the Jam consistently had over the duration of their relatively short career. Gone is the fiery anthem “The Eton Rifles” and in its place is the soft “Butterfly Collector,” which was a B-side. Also conspicuously absent are the anthem “Man in the Corner Shop” and the harrowing “Funeral Pyre.” However, that is not to say this is a bad compilation — far from it. The punk rock anthem “In the City” kicks things off in fine form, and hits like “Going Underground,” “Town Called Malice,” “Start,” and “That’s Entertainment” all make appearances. It’s a fine primer for those previously unfamiliar with their works, but the earlier 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Jam (the version with the black-and-white photograph on the cover) will serve as a more well-rounded introduction. Die-hard fans will want to check out Snap! or The Very Best of the Jam, Rovi

Excerpt: Robert Capa (October 22, 1913 May 25, 1954), born Endre Ern Friedmann, was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. His action photographs, such as those taken during the 1944 Normandy invasion, portray the violence of war with unique impact. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos with, among others, the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The organization was the first cooperative agency for worldwide freelance photographers. Born Endre Friedmann to Dezs and Júlia Friedmann on October 22, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. Deciding that there was little future under the regime in Hungary, he left home at 18. Capa originally wanted to be a writer; however, he found work in photography in Berlin and grew to love the art. In 1933, he moved from Germany to France because of the rise of Nazism, but found it difficult to find work there as a freelance journalist. He adopted the name “Robert Capa” around this time because he felt that it would be recognizable and American-sounding since it was similar to that of film director Frank Capra. (In fact, “cápa” is a Hungarian word meaning ’shark’.) Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936From 1936 to 1939, he was in Spain, photographing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, along with Gerda Taro, his companion and professional photography partner, and David Seymour. In 1938, he traveled to the Chinese city of Wuhan to document the resistance to the Japane… More:

72 Girls and Some Boys Who Could Be Models

$20

In the winter of 2005, Belgian photographer Anne Daems lived in New York City for six months as a Resident of the International Studio and Curatorial Program. In this small book of street photography, Daems focuses her lens on young New Yorkers, captured unawares–on the sidewalks of Soho, in the subway, under scaffolding, in traffic, and through shop windows. These delicate surveillance snapshots raise questions about voyeurism, youth, conventional beauty and how we tend to classify strangers. They are accompanied by an interview between Daems and artist Dan Graham, whose work also deals with surveillance:DG: Well, your work is about people. You”re interested in people, aren”t you?AD: Mmmmm.GD: You”re not interested in technique, like Gursky.AD: No, not at all.DG: Basically in normal people. But how normal are people?(both start laughing)AD: Well, the nicest people are a bit abnormal.

A Chance Meeting: Intertwined Lives of American Writers and Artists, 1854-1967

A Chance Meeting: Intertwined Lives of American Writers and Artists, 1854-1967

$13.99

“They met in ordinary ways,” writes Rachel Cohen in her introduction, “a careful arrangement after long admiration, a friend’s casual introduction, or because they both just happened to be standing near the drinks. . . . They talked to each other for a few hours or for forty years, and later it seemed to them impossible that they could have missed each other.”Each chapter of this inventive consideration of American culture evokes an actual meeting between two historical figures. In 1854, Henry James, as a boy, goes with his father to have a daguerreotype made by Mathew Brady and is captured in a moment of self-consciousness about being American. Brady returns to photograph Walt Whitman and, later, at City Point in the midst of the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant. Meanwhile, Henry James begins a lasting friendship with William Dean Howells, and also meets Sarah Orne Jewett, who in turn is a mentor to Willa Cather. Mark Twain publishes Grant’s memoirs; W.E.B. Du Bois and his professor William James visit the young Helen Keller; and Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz argue about photography. Later, Carl Van Vechten and Gertrude Stein, who was also a student of William James’s, attend a performance of The Rite of Spring; Hart Crane goes out on the town with Charlie Chaplin; Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston write a play together; Elizabeth Bishop takes Marianne Moore, who was photographed by both Van Vechten and Richard Avedon, to the circus; Avedon and James Baldwin collaborate on a book; John Cage and Marcel Duchamp play chess; and Norman Mailer and Robert Lowell march on the Pentagon in the anti–Vietnam War demonstration of1967. The accumulation of these pairings draws the reader into the mysterious process through which creativity has been sparked and passed on among iconoclastic American writers and artists.Ultimately, Rachel Cohen reveals a long chain of friendship, rebellion, and influence

Carmel Snow, who changed the course of our culture by launching the careers of some of today's greatest figures in fashion and the arts, was one of the most extraordinary women of the twentieth century. As editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958 she championed the concept of "a well-dressed magazine for the well-dressed mind," bringing cutting-edge art, fiction, photography, and reportage into the American home. Now comes A Dash of Daring, a first and definitive biography of this larger-than-life figure in publishing, art, and letters. Veteran magazine journalist Penelope Rowlands describes the remarkable places Snow frequented and the people whose lives she transformed, among them Richard Avedon, Diana Vreeland, Geoffrey Beene, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cristobal Balenciaga, Lauren Bacall, and Truman Capote. She chronicles Snow's life on both sides of the Atlantic, beginning in nineteenth-century Ireland and continuing to Paris, Milan, and New York City, the fashion capitals of the world.Snow was the daughter of an Irish immigrant, who was herself a forward-thinking businesswoman, and she worked in her mother's custom dressmaking shop before being discovered by the magazine publisher Conde Nast and training under Edna Woolman Chase, the famous longtime editor of Vogue. From there it was on to Harper's Bazaar which, with the help of such key employees as Avedon, Vreeland, and art director Alexei Brodovitch, Snow turned into the most admired magazine of the century. Among the disparate talents who worked at Bazaar in the Snow era were Andy Warhol, the heiress Doris Duke, Maeve Brennan, and members of the storied Algonquin Round Table.Overflowing with previously untold stories of the colorful and glamorous, A Dash of Daring is a compelling portrait of the fashion world during a golden era.

Now that they’re entering adulthood and her long-delayed photography career is taking off, she can almost taste the freedom.Shaken by self-doubt, Dr. Mick Larsen turns his back on his big-city psychiatric practice and settles for the small-town quiet of Redbud Mill, where he can hide his past successes and failures. To Caroline, he shows only a man who wants to put down roots and start a family—good reasons for her to stay away. Then someone starts vandalizing local landmarks she has photographed. Now Caroline must convince a man with little faith in his own abilities that he can help her find the disturbed mind in their midst. But even as she teaches him to trust himself, she must fight the temptation to trust him with her future and her heart.

After Bloody Sunday: Representation, Ethics, Justice

After Bloody Sunday: Representation, Ethics, Justice

$42.08

After Bloody Sunday investigates the ways in which the events in Derry on January 30, 1972, have found representation in photography, film, theatre, poetry, television documentary, art installations, murals, music, commemorative events, legal discourse, eyewitness testimony, and pressure-group campaigns. Thirty-six years after the killing and wounding of twenty-six civil rights protestors in Derry, the new independent tribunal chaired by Lord Mark Saville of Newdigate is close to publishing its findings. The Report of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry promises to be the most comprehensive act of truth-recovery yet attempted in relation to the many atrocities that scarred the North of Ireland during the three decades of political conflict. Mark Saville has the formidable, and perhaps impossible, task of establishing the definitive truth of Bloody Sunday. His attempt comes in the wake of many other earlier versions of the events of 30th January 1972 that have also claimed to present the truth of what happened that day. After Bloody Sunday examines the portrayals of the events of January 30th, 1972, and its devastating repercussions in photography, film, theatre, poetry, television documentary, art installations, murals, commemorative events, and legal discourse. The authors consider their veracity, their mechanisms of authenticity, and their assumptions that a particular medium—be it film, or language, or visual art—can somehow articulate the truth of Bloody Sunday. In the course of six thematically-organized chapters, the authors analyze productions ranging from high-profile popular forms of entertainment—such as Paul Greengrass’s feature film Bloody Sunday and Jimmy McGovern’s made-for-television film, Sunday—through to lesser-known treatments in poetry (Thomas Kinsella’s Butcher’s Dozen), drama (Frank McGuinness’s Carthaginians and Brian Friel’s The Freedom of the City), and visual art (The Bogside

 Alfred Stieglitz New York

Alfred Stieglitz New York

$14.87

Iconic images of the city from one of the masters of photography collected for the first time in a charming homage to lost New York. Here is “The City of Ambition”—the New York that inspires dreams, the Gotham of the early twentieth century, when grand skyscrapers sprouted everywhere amid columns of steam. Alfred Stieglitz—the legendary art impresario and husband of Georgia O’Keeffe—forged a paean to his native city, finding inspiration on the streets, from the harbor ferry, and in the high-rise views. In her essay, respected art historian Bonnie Yochelson places Stieglitz’s work within the context of the burgeoning commercial world around him and other artists of the period. Stieglitz witnessed a key period in New York’s history when the city suddenly transformed into a modern metropolis. As a child, he grew up in an upper Fifth Avenue brownstone still surrounded by empty lots and dirt roads. Naturally, he was fascinated by the monumental buildings rising around him, and you can sense his wonder in these images. Among the classic buildings he so artfully captured here are the (now demolished) Madison Square Gardens, the Flatiron, Rockefeller Center, the Waldorf Astoria, the Chrysler, and the Empire State. His images formed archetypes that would go on to shape the imagination of generations. This intimate volume makes for a beautiful souvenir of timeless New York, a city of striving and dreaming.

Poised to be the most important photography book of the year, Zoe Strauss’’s America shines a light on the often unseen people and places in the United States today. Once in a great while, a photographer and their photographs break new ground and people sit right up and take notice. Zoe Strauss is such a photographer. The Philadelphia native who has brought us searing images of that city’’s marginalized people and places on the fringe of society, has taken her no holds barred, up close and personal style of photography to the roads less traveled across America. At times witty, touching, poetic, and downright shocking, Zoe Strauss’’s photographs capture the beauty and struggle of everyday life and resonate as a social document of our time, and as sheer and powerful art. Zoe Strauss picked up a camera on her 30th birthday, but in only eight years, has generated a huge body of work that has been exhibited in the Whitney Biennial, and has garnered her a United States Artists grant.

 America's Southwest

America’s Southwest

$3.58

A land of rugged, even outrageous beauty, the American Southwest is the site of legends and historical events as bold as the land itself. This book, with its gorgeous photography-including many aerial shots- takes us on a journey through a land that embodies the very sinews of American spirit.Vast blue skies unfolding over geologic formations striated in red, ochre, and black: immense canyons, snow capped mountains, natural arches, these geological wonders are hard to fit in a camera lens, unless you have Colombo’s skill. The history of the West explodes from her images and text; after all, this is the land of Geronimo and the Apaches, the Spanish missionaries, the Mormon settlers, gold miners, traders on the Santa Fe Trail, and Billy the Kid. It is also the site of a great prehistoric tribe, the Anasazi, which mysteriously disappeared at the height of its cultural achievement in the thirteenth century. Here are her portraits of beautiful US cities like Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, and Denver. The whole Southwest lies before your eyes in these splendid pages, and you are invited to experience the adventure.

Anne Fairfax and Richard Sammons are at the forefront of a movement among architects today who draw inspiration from the wellspring of the classical traditions in architecture. They have developed a body of work that reflects and adheres to the long-held theories of proportion and order passed down through many past generations of scholarship and practice. The firm’s office also served as the headquarters for Henry Hope Reid’s Classical America, the only organization offering an alternative to modernist aesthetics until the establishment of the Institute of Classical Architecture in 1992. The twenty-four projects in this volume show the firm’s consistent focus on classical architectural beauty, whether the chosen style be Palladian, Tuscan, Mediterranean, Georgian, Adamesque, Neo-classical, British or Dutch Colonial, Colonial Revival, or even East Coast Shingle Style, in all of which Fairfax & Sammons are eminently proficient. The projects selected out of the firm’s large body of work include country houses located in Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Florida, including the renovation of town houses and apartments in New York City–all presented in new color photography.

 American Modern

American Modern

$25.29

Designer and merchant, collector and tastemaker, Thomas O’Brien has made a career of translating cool notions of modernism into an easy and generous array of modern styles that anyone can attain. Now he introduces readers to a range of those styles—from casual to formal, vintage to urban—alongside stunning photography and charming design stories.      O’Brien carefully describes the design process of his chosen projects, including a downtown New York City loft, a traditional Connecticut estate, and a converted schoolhouse in eastern Long Island. Each home explores a view on the modern design spectrum he has created, as well as the individual choices that make the design unique and its mix essentially American. He explains not only what was at work to create a given style, but how readers can import those practices to their own homes and personal design sensibilities. Important design principles such as architectural authenticity, color relationships, correctness of scale, and informed collecting are threaded through a practical narrative that reads like a master class in interior design.     American Modern is an inspiring design volume that will redefine the way readers think about modern interiors.

American Salons: Encounters with European Modernism, 1885-1917

American Salons: Encounters with European Modernism, 1885-1917

$105.54

In American Salons, Robert Crunden provides a sweeping account of the American encounter with European Modernism up to our entry into World War I. Crunden begins with deft portraits of the figures who were central to the birth of Modernism, including James Whistler, the eccentric expatriate American painter who became the archetypal artist in his dress and behavior, and Henry and William James, who broke new ground in the genre of the novel and in psychology, influencing an international audience in a broad range of fields. At the heart of the book are the American salons – the intimate, personal gatherings of artists and intellectuals where Modernism flourished. In Chicago, Floyd Dell and Margery Currey spread new ideas to Sherwood Anderson, Theodore Dreiser, and others. In London, Ezra Pound could be found behind everything from the cigars of W. B. Yeats to the prose of Ford Madox Hueffer. In Paris, the salons of Leo and Gertrude Stein, and Michael and Sarah Stein, gave Picasso and Matisse their first secure audiences and incomes; meanwhile, Gertrude Stein produced a new writing style that had an incalculable impact on the generation of Ernest Hemingway. Most important of all were the salons of New York City. Alfred Stieglitz pioneered new forms of photography at the famous 291 Gallery. Mabel Dodge brought together modernist playwrights and painters, introducing them to political reformers and radicals. At the salon of Walter and Louise Arensberg, Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia rubbed shoulders with Wallace Stevens, Man Ray, and William Carlos Williams. By 1917, no art in America remained untouched by these new institutions. From the journalism of H. L. Mencken to the famous 1913Armory Show in New York, Crunden illuminates this pivotal era, offering perceptive insights and evocative descriptions of the central personalities of Modernism.
