Unique Fashion Photography

Photography can be a glamorous profession and none more so than the field of fashion photography. While models in those glamour magazines are good looking it is up to the photographer to get the best out of the model not just in terms of the looks also in terms of the mood and tone of the picture. If you feel that taking glamorous pictures is your thing, then perhaps fashion photography is the career for you.

Some to things to keep in mind when you can enter the world of fashion photography:-

Start by putting together a fashion portfolio. Get you friends to model for you. Remember they don’t need to have model-like looks are not important. What you are trying to convey to anyone viewing your portfolio is your ability and creativity in things like posing them or using different backgrounds, using lights and different filters, experimenting with angles and even the use of props. Once you’ve taken a bunch of pictures, zero in on what you believe is 15-20 pictures of your best work. It might be a good idea to put together a decent mix of color as well as black n white pictures.

You might also want to carry additional prints with you aside from your portfolio. This is a good idea so incase a client asks for samples that can be left behind, you can give them the extra copies. In addition to this physical portfolio, it is important to have a virtual one as well. Most fashion photography (or even other branches) professionals have their own website where they display their work. The good part about having a website is that unlike a physical portfolio which contains a limited number of pictures, one can upload hundreds of images onto a website for a client to go through

You need to network in this business so meet with the marketing managers in local fashion boutiques. It is a good place to start doing some work because these local fashion stores are much more likely to give you local advertising work rather than some of the big retail fashion stores. Also a good idea is to become friendly with the account executives in local advertising agencies. These are the people who handle the business of your client so knowing them will certainly help.

Submit your work to all fashion magazines of course as this will likely be the mainstay or work once you have established yourself. Be in touch with modeling agencies as well as networking with these companies will pay off in the long run. Plus it doesn’t hurt to get a head-start on know the people i.e. models you will eventually end up working with.

It must be said that fashion photography is no walk in the park. People have struggled for years before making it in this line but the rewards can be quite good once you’re there. Remember it is critical as a fashion photographer to be unique and different from the lot as this is what will get you notice and land you assignments.
