The Paradox of Photography By Taminiaux, Pierre $93.37 The paradox of photography analyzes the discourse on photography by four of the most important modern French poets and theorists (Baudelaire, Breton, Barthes and ValGery). The Düsseldorf School of Photography – DAP $95 The Düsseldorf School of Photography Edited and text by Stefan Gronert. The German photographic movement commonly known as the Düsseldorf School of Photography has become synonymous with artistic excellence and innovation. It began in the mid-1970s at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, under the instruction of the photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, known for their comparative grids of mundane industrial buildings captured with an objective and clinical eye. This school has not only birthed some of today’s most important and successful photographers, but has also had a fundamental and lasting influence on the history of the medium. The Düsseldorf School of Photography presents over 160 images in a spectacular overview of the breadth of the Düsseldorf School from the early 1970s to today. This impeccable survey is filled with superb reproductions of the best-known photographs by three generations of key Düsseldorf artists: Bernd and Hilla Becher, Laurenz Berges, Elger Esser, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Simone Nieweg, Thomas Ruff, Jörg Sasse, Thomas Struth and Petra Wunderlich. With a scholarly text, extensive artist bios and a plate section dedicated to each of these artists, The Düsseldorf School of Photography offers the first comprehensive assessment of this important photographic movement—one that dominates the salesrooms and museums of our times. Excerpt: 2D computer graphics is the computer -based generation of digital images mostly from two-dimensional models (such as 2D geometric models, text, and digital images) and by techniques specific to them. The word may stand for the branch of computer science that comprises such techniques, or for the models themselves.Raster graphic sprites (left) and masks (right)2D computer graphics are mainly used in applications that were originally developed upon traditional printing and drawing technologies, such as typography , cartography , technical drawing , advertising , etc.. In those applications, the two-dimensional image is not just a representation of a real-world object, but an independent artifact with added semantic value; two-dimensional models are therefore preferred, because they give more direct control of the image than 3D computer graphics (whose approach is more akin to photography than to typography ).In many domains, such as desktop publishing , engineering , and business , a description of a document based on 2D computer graphics techniques can be much smaller than the corresponding digital image often by a factor of 1/1000 or more. This representation is also more flexible since it can be rendered at different resolutions to suit different output devices . For these reasons, documents and illustrations are often stored or transmitted as 2D graphic files.2D computer graphics started in the 1950s, based on vector graphics devices . The ancients, says Aristotle, wrote politically, but we rhetorically: and his remark is admirably illustrated by e. g. the old Panchatantra, whose author certainly had in him as much policy as Thucydides, although he chose to deliver his wisdom in apologues, rather than in the prosaic and somewhat pedantic photography of actual affairs. The Hindoo term, nitij means, not so much policy, as diplomacy, and so their niti-sTiastra, or doctrine of policy, refers rather to the clever conduct ofaffairs in negotiation, than to anything else. And therefore, love-affairs, which we should hardly include under politics, fall in with the Hindoo conception, and in this sense women are, as the Hindoos think, and their annals abundantly testify, at least the equals, in policy, of men. When the author of Eothen commended certain women of the Bgaan isles for their admirable nokiTim), he was using the term exactly in the sense of niti. And this correlation of diplomacy and love is the substance of the present story, the story of a love-affair, in which, if we may believe a great authority, the poet-king, Bhartrihari, the special quality required and exhibited is craft. The Hindoos in fact resemble women, and women the Hindoos, in this particular, that they are both of them apt to identify policy with craft, and like rivers, generally prefer to reach desired ends by crooked ways: and this is why both of them, though often very dexterous negotiators |

Ansel Adams: Letters, 1916 – 1984 $17.95 This popularly priced edition of Adams’ acclaimed book of letters, originally published in 1988 as a companion volume to his best-selling autobiography, will bring the vivid letters of America’s most beloved photographer — environmentalist to a whole new generation of readers. In his early years in Yosemite, Adams formed the habit of writing letters at every opportunity. His correspondence, therefore, provides virtually the full record of his life. Throughout the years, wherever he went, from the Southwest to Maine to Alaska, he wrote literally thousands of letters and postcards. Among the family, friends, fellow photographers, environmentalists, and politicians with whom he corresponded rank such eminent names as Alfred Stieglitz, Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand, Jimmy Carter, Beaumont and Nancy Newhall, Garry Trudeau, and Edward Weston. This book reveals the growth of the artist and the man, as well as the development of the art of photography. Here is the voice of one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists and conservationists and one of the most personable and memorable of men. Here is the mindscape of genius, the profound, impetuous, life-loving man, reminding us time and again, with disarming irony, that the written word is often more intimate, more revealing than speech. |

Atta Kim $143.28 This is the most comprehensive look to date at the work of Atta Kim, one of Korea’s most distinctive contemporary artists. Born in 1956, Kim uses photography to create dramatic, large-scale works that reflect his fascination with philosophical questions. The Deconstruction Series (1992-95) features disconcerting images of seemingly lifeless men and women whose naked bodies are scattered like seeds in open fields and desolate natural settings. In the Museum Project (1995-2002), Kim poses people drawn from a wide range of social types in clear acrylic boxes lit like museum vitrines and placed in a variety of urban and natural locations. These images of what he ironically calls contemporary treasures provide an unusual perspective on contemporary approaches to sexuality, materialism, politics and religion. For the large-scale, visually spectacular color photographs of the On-Air Project (2002 to the present), Kim employed extended exposures–sometimes as long as eight hours–to explore fundamental questions of time and perception. Using such varied subjects as parliamentary sessions, soccer games, outdoor military exercises and erotic unions, he suggests the ephemerality of human existence, and that it is possible for us to perceive the passage of time in radically different ways. Atta Kim includes a career-spanning interview with the artist by ICP curator Christopher Phillips. |

Behind the Mask of the Mattachine: The Hal Call Chronicles and the Early Movement for Homosexual Emancipation $41.3 Take a revealing look at gay sex and gay history—and the man who helped kick-start gay activism in today’s societyThe Mattachine is the origin of the contemporary American gay movement. One of the major players in this movement was Hal Call, America’s first openly gay journalist and the man most responsible for the end of government censorship of frontal male nude photography through the mail. Behind the Mask of the Mattachine: The Early Movement for Homosexual Emancipation, the Hal Call Chronicles travels back to the times before Stonewall and its aftermath, to the beginnings of the modern homosexual movement and the lesser-known individuals who started it. This stunning chronicle boldly goes beyond the standard whitewashed/desexualized history usually provided by other gay historians, to give the unexpurgated—and sexually charged—history of the activists who organized homosexuals, using the biography of the controversial Hal Call as its springboard.Behind the Mask of the Mattachine provides a revealing illustration of gay life and gay sex in the past through an intergenerational history of the early gay men’s movement. Noted author James T. Sears generously weaves oral history, seldom seen historical documents, and rare photographs to provide a rich behind-the-scenes look at the first wave of Mattachine activists and the emerging gay pornography industry. This historical chronicle of a previously neglected era is packed with details of Call’s personal struggles, his celebration of the phallus, and his assertion linking homophobia and heteronormativity to our culture’s sex-negative tradition. The reader is transported to the sexual underworld of youthful hustlers, porno kingpins, spurned lovers, sex clubs, cruising grounds, secretive societies, and personal in-fighting over the direction of gay activism. This enthralling narrative is impeccably referenced.Behind the Mask of the Mattachine |

Collectivism After Modernism $29.95 The desire to speak in a collective voice has long fueled social imagination and artistic production. Prior to the Second World War, artists understood collectivization as an expression of the promise or failure of industrial and political modernity envisioned as a mass phenomenon. After the war, artists moved beyond the old ideal of progress by tying the radicalism. Organized around a series of case studies spanning the globe from Europe, Japan, and the United States to Africa, Cuba, and Mexico, Collectivism after Modernism covers such renowned collectives as the Guerrilla Girls and the Yes Men, as well as lesser-known groups. Contributors explore the ways in which collectives function within cultural norms, social conventions, and corporate or state-sanctioned art. They examine the impact of new technologies on artistic practice, the emergence of networked group identity, and the common characteristic of collective production to blur the typical separations between artists, activists, service workers, and communities in need. Together, these essays demonstrate that collectivism survives as an influential and increasingly visible artistic practice despite the art world s star system of individuality. Collectivism after Modernism provides the historical understanding necessary for thinking through postmodern collective practice, now and into the future. Collectivism After Modernism: The Art of Social Imagination After 1945 $88.92 The desire to speak in a collective voice has long fueled social imagination and artistic production. Cops vs. Thugs $14.95 In his 1975 masterpiece Cops vs. Thugs, director Kinji Fukasaku (Battle Royale) paints a dynamic portrait of flourishing corruption and unchecked greed using gritty 70’s cop movie elan and true crime expose detail. Brimming with irresistibly brutal vitality, Cops vs. Thugs demonstrates why Fukasaku counts filmmakers Takeshi Kitano, Quentin Tarantino and Takeshi Miike as devoted acolytes. It’s 1963 and the Kurashima City yakuza underworld has narrowed to two warring clans. The Kawade gang uses political influence to legitimatize their rackets, while the Ohara group shares an uneasy alliance with corrupt local cops. But when Boss Ohara initiates a bold waterfront land-grab, the precarious balance between gangsters, police, and politicians tips towards a bloodbath. Drop dead, it’ll clean the city, growls the Violence Squad’s Detective Kuno to a group of Kawade assassins en route to a night club massacre. But Kuno’s own hands are not spotless. Torn between his childhood connections with a yakuza kingpin, mounting pressure from reformer superiors, and the trigger happy gun-lust that led him to the police force in the first place, Kuno occupies the eye of Cops vs. Thugs’ full-force hurricane of ferocious action. Coolly supplementing the body count on both sides, Kuno is a quick-triggered pilgrim in a world where, gangsters and cops are the same. They both respect codes and laws. From an impromptu precinct men’s room conjugal visit to a bicycle-mounted beheading, Cops vs. Thugs sneaks scathing social critique inside a blood-spattered souffle of audacious photography and grisly violence, garnished with Toshiaki Tsushima’s wah-wah driven score. |

Faces of the Confederacy: An Album of Southern Soldiers and Their Stories $31.95 “The history of the Civil War is the stories of its soldiers,” writes Ronald S. Coddington in the preface to Faces of the Confederacy. This book tells the stories of seventy-seven Southern soldiers—young farm boys, wealthy plantation owners, intellectual elites, uneducated poor—who posed for photographic portraits, cartes de visite, to leave with family, friends, and sweethearts before going off to war. Coddington, a passionate collector of Civil War–era photography, conducted a monumental search for these previously unpublished portrait cards, then unearthed the personal stories of their subjects, putting a human face on a war rife with inhuman atrocities. The Civil War took the lives of 22 of every 100 men who served. Coddington follows the exhausted survivors as they return home to occupied cities and towns, ravaged farmlands, a destabilized economy, and a social order in the midst of upheaval. This book is a haunting and moving tribute to those brave men. Like its companion volume, Faces of the Civil War: An Album of Union Soldiers and Their Stories, this book offers readers a unique perspective on the war and contributes to a better understanding of the role of the common soldier. |

Fashion Spreads: Word and Image in Fashion Photography since 1980 $62.67 Doubly tainted by its associations with consumerism and the ‘frivolous’ world of couture, fashion photography has long been ignored as a serious site for academic study. Yet both the body and dress have proved keenly revealing of gender, race and sexual politics. Further, fashion photography has been transformed by aesthetic concerns, sexual politics and the pleasure of spectatorship – all of which suggest that its iconography represents a rich source for the analysis of how identity is constructed. Exploring representations of the feminine and the masculine body – from super-vamp to super-waif, from buffalo boy to new man – this book considers the social, economic and aesthetic factors that have been instrumental in forging an identity for fashion photography since 1980. Drawing extensively on fashion spreads from Vogue, The Face and Arena, the author takes as his starting point Barthes’ axiom that the magazine is ‘a machine for making Fashion’. He explores how meaning is constructed in word and image, but he refutes Barthes’ claim that the fashion system is a vacuous form of signification. In evaluating the ostensible paradox between sexual objectification and spectatorship, the author also looks at what the depiction of both male and female bodies in fashion spreads reveals about power, knowledge and pleasure. How does the iconography of fashion gratify our desires? Who are these images for – men and women? men or women? Does fashion photography invent role models, or simply satisfy nascent cultural values of beauty and sexual attraction? Why is fashion photography considered a form of ’soft porn’ for the delectation of men when women are by far the largest consumers of fashion periodicals? How do the investments of different producers and spectators – male and female, gay and straight, white and non-white – affect the fashion image? In answering these questions and many more, this book represents a significant contribution to the following areas: |
